How do you create package design that captures
the essence of a perfume?

Challenge

The challenge was to design packaging for a line of luxury perfumes created by Essence, a fictitious,  French perfumery.

Solution

Since the name of the company has two different meanings—one, the extract from a plant or other matter to flavor scent; and two, the intrinsic and indispensable nature of something, especially something abstract, which defines its character—I decided to base my design on both definitions.

I chose a specific flower for each scent and placed it on a gradient background that was created by blurring flower images to the point where only the colors are discernable. I then added motion blur to the specific flower. I wanted the design to make the viewer feel as if they are looking not only at the flower, but also at the essence of the flower.

For the bottle design, I wanted a bottle similar to an apothecary bottle, since a lot of chemistry goes into creating perfumes. But at the same time, I didn’t want it to feel rustic; I wanted the bottle to have a high-end, elegant feel to it. So instead of using a glass stopper, I created a crystal cap to give the bottle a sense of elegance.
