How do you create a lifestyle magazine for a more mature audience?

Challenge

I was tasked with creating a lifestyle magazine dedicated to finding ways to live a beautiful life, where one can experience the extraordinary even in the midst of the ordinary. The topics included, but were not limited to, travel, food, art, literature, music, and movies. The target audience was mainly women who are in their 30s and beyond.

Solution

I started by researching different magazines for inspiration. And before I began creating the magazine, I put together a list of typefaces that included serif and sans serif type and even a script type. I then selected a color palette that visually reflected watching the sunset on a beach. As I created the layouts for the spreads, I changed up the type to create visual texture, and I used a consistent color scheme to give the magazine a feeling of harmony. I also varied the grid layout to provide an engaging experience.

What I Did

*The photographs that I took are of the dog toys at the bottom of the department page on hotels and pets, the color wheel for the Michael’s ad, and the background image for the Taste of Santa Barbara spread.
